Pink is the New (FILL IN)

I have walked for Race for the Cure on and off for the past 10 years. I began because I thought it was a good cause and I had a few relatives affected by breast cancer. However, it was my Girl Scout leader who really gave me inspiration to continue walking.

My leader is a 2 time survivor of breast cancer. As a troop, we would walk every year. This continued through high school. Our troop even began a community event 8 years ago that continues today. Every spring Community 20 in Harford County, MD holds "Bowling for Breast Cancer"-a fun event for girls to bowl while donating items for the Johns Hopkins Breast Center Survivors.

My leader is very public about her history of breast cancer and has made it into a career. She works in the Breast Center at Johns Hopkins and continues to do many walks for Komen.

To this day, she is one of the reasons I choose to walk. With women like her in the crowd, it shows others that even though the fight may be difficult, it is possible. I know she has given hope to many people. I hope that by walking I can help others in some way, even if it is just letting them know that someone else cares enough to give of their own time to participate in "Race for the Cure."
